As a Christian, if I was attacked by thugs, should I use self-defense or "turn the other cheek?"?

You may be taking Christ's words a bit too literal. Christ is teaching that revenge and strife is forbidden(see Matthew 5:38), not that we should set ourselves up for abuse. Learn your martial arts and just don't use it unless someone is attacking you to harm you.
