Please help edit paragraph thanks!?
In the story a Lesson before dying, Grant’s cynicism has revealed his anger and frustration to help Jefferson to become a man instead of a hog. By doing this favour for Miss Emma and the black community to prove that Jefferson is a man, it also shows his superior side as a teacher. On page (31) Grant says “ They want me to make him a man before he dies, now his godmother wants me to visit him and make him know prove to these white men that he’s a man that he’s not a hog, I’m supposed to make him a man, who am I god?” Grant thinks it’s impossible for him to complete this task that he had promised Miss Emma. Grant has a feeling of hopelessness and thinks pessimistically that he is unable to make Jefferson a man instead of being a hog. Jefferson’s cynicism has leaded him to a state of hopelessness and he thinks himself as a hog waiting to be killed. On page (83) Jefferson says “ I’m gon show you how hog eats” He knelt down on the floor and put his head inside the bag and started eating without using his hands. He even sounded like a hog. This shows how deeply the inhumane treatment that Jefferson has received and has affected his mind. Jefferson denies the fact that he is a human and instead he thinks himself as a hog just because the juror called him a hog. Jefferson is condemned to die, however Grant wants him to be a man and die with honour and dignity but Jefferson refuses to be a man. On page (220) when Grant persuades Jefferson to talk to Reverend Ambrose, they discussed about prayer and dying. Grant offers Jefferson a sweet potato and it symbolizes Jefferson that he is human being with something to offer and he has learned his lesson He is a man and not a hog. By accepting Grant’s potato, it demonstrates forgiveness and his affection for Grant. The sweet potato is all Grant has and he’s willing to share it with Grant because he realizes Grant has helped him to regain his manhood.
